El Cajon is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 94,869 at the 2000 census. El Cajon is Spanish for “the box,” relating to it being a parcel of land granted out of the vast Mission San Diego de Alcala tract and used for farming by Spanish missionaries.
As of the census of 2000, there were 94,869 people, 34,199 households, and 23,152 families residing in the city of El Cajon. The population density was 2,514.0/km² (6,510.6/mi²). There were 35,190 housing units at an average density of 932.5/km² (2,415.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 74.00% White, 5.37% African American, 0.99% Native American, 2.79% Asian, 0.37% Pacific Islander, 10.49% from other races, and 5.99% from two or more races.
